Butch Watters 6/14/84

Just received a note from PAL alum Adam Cobb who wanted to bring to our attention the 39th anniversary of the passing of his cousin Butch Watters on 6/14/84. As we celebrate another closing day with championship games, grad and scholarship awards, and movie night on the field that bears his name, keep a good though for Butch's extended family and understand the significance of a field dedication- both a permanent honor of the memory and an ongoing reminder of the loss.

The Plainville Athletic League is saddened by the recent passing of Stan Lewicki, Sr. Mr. Lewicki's contributions as a member, volunteer, local business owner, and benefactor are beyond compare, and we are all the richer as a result. We are proud that the field that bears his name will continue to help develop PAL players for years to come. Our deepest condolences go out to Stan's extended family.

Memorial Day Invitational Scholarship Tournament May 24-26

The PAL will be hosting it second tournament in a row this coming Memorial Day weekend.  If you can, please make some time to stop down to the PAL on Saturday or Sunday to lend a hand to make this softball tournament as successful as this past weekend’s baseball tournament.  You can help maintain and/or prep the fields, work a kitchen shift, empty a couple trash cans as well as offer a whole bunch of other behind-the-scenes assistance that lend to running a successful tournament.
If you want to help but need guidance, please let me know and I’ll be sure and find something that will fit your skill level.
Thanks very much for continuing to help make the PAL what it is.
-Chris Murphy, Facilities and Safety Director

Just a reminder to everyone - this tournament is not a fundraiser for softball or for baseball or for any team - it is the primary fundraiser for the PAL Scholarship Fund, which will this year be awarding six scholarships to deserving graduates of the PAL programs.  Please help us to make this tournament a success for all!

9th Annual KP Cup Baseball Tournament UPDATE 5/18/13

Welcome to the 9th Annual
2013 King Philip Cup

Spring Baseball Tournament
May 16-19, 2013

Links for SUNDAY BRACKET AND TEAM SEEDING added

Notes for Sunday:

* Winner of 16 vs. 17 play-in game will play the N. Cardinals on Waters at 11:30 am

* There is still time limits for the games up until the semi-finals (final 4 teams).  The difference for elimination games is that once an inning starts, it will completed.  If the umpires declare 'last inning' - especially due to time, it will be completed.  But again, please be hustling on and off the fields all day and keep play moving.  Extra innings are allowed as well.

* One MVP pin will be given out for each team during elimination round.

* Trophies will be presented for the champion and runner up after the last game

* Pitchers can only pitch a MAX of 6 innings tomorrow.  9 Total for the tourney.  EXAMPLE:  Johnny White pitched 4 innings in the seed rounds - he can pitch 5 innings during elimination round.  Bobby Blue pitched 1 inning in seed round, he can pitch 6 innings in elimination round.

* Highest seed will always be home team.  Highest seed is 1, down to lowest seed 16.  No re-seeding after each round - what you have now for assignment will be your seed for the duration of the tourney.

* Winning team report your pitcher innings to the scorers table upon completion of game.

* HAVE FUN!  This is a fun experience for the kids, but also very stressful for them.  Please don't add to their stress level... or mine.

Thanks, Rich Boucher  774-284-2497

Plainville ~ Norfolk ~ Wrentham Majors

(WARNING - there is a lot of info...  Please read and re-read carefully)

Well the KP Cup is finally upon us!  We are looking forward to another great event.

For those new to the tourney - welcome!  The basic rules are 2 seeding round games followed by a single elimination round - 3 games minimum per team. Attached are the rules for this years' tournament as well as the seeding round games and elimination round bracket.  As there are 17 teams this year, there will be ONE play-in game (17 vs. 16) on Saturday evening, May 18th.  If your team goes 0-2, be ready to play Saturday evening.

>>HR Derby email will be sent separately and will include minors teams

>>Norfolk coaches - please send me your cell phone numbers.

* Thursday, May 16th - seeding round games begin
*
Thursday, May 16th - minor league HR derby, 6pm
*
Friday, May 17th - Major league HR derby, 6pm
* Saturday, May 18th - seeding round games conclude (games start at 9am)
*
Saturday, May 18th - PLAY IN GAME - 17th seed vs. 16 seed
* Sunday, May 19th - Elimination round - games start at 8am

Please review the rules attached - all information should be in there.

PAL facility/tourney notes:
* No dogs allowed
*
We have 3 batting cages - one for each field.  Nelson and Watters cages are behind RF of Watters.
- Cages are allowed to be SHARED by the two teams playing on the field for the NEXT game.  For example, if you are playing on Watters at 2pm, you may start sharing the cages for Watters once the game BEFORE you starts on Watters.  The cages can be used up to 15 minutes prior to your scheduled time. Please- NO soft toss or Tee hitting into the outside of the cages.

YOUR TEAM MUST BE ON THE FIELD AND READY TO PLAY AT THE START OF YOUR GAME. We are on a tight game schedule we ask that teams are ready to play 15 minutes prior to you scheduled start time.

****  Important ****

* Once your game is complete, please gather your equipment and vacate the dugout immediately. You can have your post-game team meetings outside the fields - there are plenty of areas to converse, especially around the snack shack area.

Monitor you emails all week for updates - there will be a follow up on the process for game check in, game/pitching reporting, and other logistics.

Thanks, Rich Boucher (

Picture Day this Saturday 5/11
Coaches,

Please forward to your teams.  The link for photo day has been setup with ordering information and the schedule for Saturday's photos. The link is:

In the event of rain (which seems highly possible) photos will be postponed and another Saturday determined for a makeup.  Here is the general protocol from the photographer for making the decision to postpone photo day:

·  If the league calls of games, we will call off photos.

·  If it is raining steadily Friday night and all reports show it will continue throughout the morning into afternoon, we will call off photos

·  If it is OK Friday but is raining steadily Saturday, we will call off photos.

If any of these occurs, we will re-schedule for another Saturday to be determined.

A spot shower here and there is OK, but steady rain means wet faces and problems with the equipment and electronics.

Summer Tribe evaluations May 5 at PAL
 Summer Tribe Evaluations (Ages 8-12)
Summer baseball tryouts will be held Sunday May 5th at PAL, please see below for the exact times.
Our summer Tribe teams participate in 3 travel baseball leagues; Hockomock Baseball League, Barnstormer League and 8 year old Friendship League. These leagues run from mid-June to the first week of August. The evaluation is used to place players on appropriate teams. Also, the Plainville Athlete League tries to have all players that are interested in summer baseball placed on a team. This is only possible if we have coaches for them. If you are interested in coaching a summer team please email Rich Boucher or Lou Weihrauch.
If for some reason you are unable to attend the evaluation please contact Rich Boucher (rboucher1999@yahoo.com) or Lou Weihrauch (lweihrau@yahoo.com). We need to finalize the amount of kids interested so we can enter the proper amount of teams in each league.

2013 Schedule
UPDATE 4/25: link for Babe Ruth Schedule and standings added

Below are links to the spreadsheets for the Boys and girls schedules. There is a separate tab in the spreadsheet for each level.
For the Girls Minors, Majors, Seniors and Boys Minors and Majors I copied the schedule from Wrentham's website into the spreadsheet for easier distribution. The link to stay up to date on the latest schedule is http://wybs.sportstech.net/Scheduler. Please note that this link and schedule does not apply to Boys and Girls Farm nor the instructional groups.

Practice Schedule (updated 4/10/13)
Attached is the practice calendar/availability leading up to opening day. I included Excel and PDF versions.
A few notes:
1) I added time to reserve the practice pitching mounds in 1 hour blocks so baseball teams can work with their pitchers if they so choose (outside of practice).
2) Weekend slots are 2 hours.
3) For the week of vacation things start at 9:00 in 2 hour slots. Anyone that had requested 5:30 evening slots can start at 5:00 if they choose.
4) I put the one game the High Schools showed online. I still have to figure out what times the HS teams will be practicing that week. Therefore, if you request something during the day it could possibly be changed depending on their practice times.
5) For soft opening nights on 4/18 and 4/19 Watters and Eisele will be scheduled for games. Nelson will be available for practice time. I also cut off the batting cages after the 4:00 slot so the teams playing can take batting practice before their games. Thursday will be a boys majors and boy minors game. Friday will be a girls seniors and girls majors game.
6) Obviously anything blacked out is not available.
Let me know if you have any questions or if there are any mistakes from what has been requested thus far. Thanks,
Darrin

BAT MAN!!

Think back to this past baseball/softball season….remember the TV show that National Geographic filmed at the Plainville Athletic League this past April? The same show which produced the 27’ foot carved bat that now graces our parking lot? Remember that…?

Well….IT’S SHOWTIME!!! Over the weekend, National Geographic announced the line-up for the new show “American Chainsaw” starring master chainsaw sculptor “The Machine” Jesse Green . Our episode, called “The Bat Man” is scheduled to air on Thursday, December 13 at 10:00pm on the National Geographic channel. Let the kids stay up late to hopefully see themselves and their friends on TV that night. It promises to be entertaining!

The Board of Directors at the PAL wishes to thank the numerous people and organizations who donated their time and efforts to make this show possible. Specifically, Andy Felix and his team of tree experts from TREE TECH of Foxboro, MA and Dave Carter from Brodie-Toyota Lifts of Sharon, MA who provided the boom lifts for the film crew.

Time to put the PAL to bed for the winter...
Our season has officially closed and we need to put the place to bed for the winter. This coming Saturday. November 3 from 8:00am until 12 noon we’ll be doing exactly that.

Here is our list…I’ll be writing this list on the dry- erase boards on the side of the clubhouse as soon as the storm lets up, so if you get up there during the week and are able to knock out a chore or two, cross it out or erase it from the list. Thanks

1. Empty trash cans
2. Stack (nest)empty trash cans in the dumpster enclosure
3. Empty recycle bins
4. Place folder blue wire recycle bins and blue plastic lids in “tool” section of the upper shed
5. Put pitching portable pitching mounds in lower shed
6. Put bases away and install plugs
7. Put all hand tools away in the upper shed
8. Organize all sheds
9. Clean out scorers boxes
10. Clean out dugouts
11. Put pitching nets in sheds
12. Drop and store hitting tunnel nets
13. Take down and store all vendor signs
14. Move, fold and stack picnic tables on back deck
15. Get a dumpster and trash all the crap we’ve been hanging on to for no apparent reason
16. Store portable bleachers ….somewhere. Maybe we can tarp them outdoor for the winter
17. Pick up litter… as a lot will have undoubtedly blown around the facility due to the high winds on Monday and Tuesday.
18. Take bags of lime still in the dugouts and store them back in the shed
19. Store lime dispensing machines
20. Store batters box templates

PAL Cares 2 Tons challenge

PAL Cares 2 Tons Team Challenge
We're looking for each team to combine their efforts for food donations this week- target is for at least 50 lbs per team. If only 20 teams partcipate, we'll put 1000 lbs. on the shelves at the pantry. If every team joins, we'll be over 1500 lbs. We need a coach, coordinator, or parent of each to take the lead on this. Great life lesson for the kids, and a great way to help your community. Currently over 2 dozen Plainville families depend on the pantry to get by on a weekly basis. Only one week to go...

Below is the maintenance schedule for Spring 2012. Check it out, know when your team is on duty and please help out where appropriate. The participating children should be expected to assist as well. 2012 PAL Baseball Rules
A lot of information here, please read carefully.

Attached are the rules for Farm, Minors and Majors that we will be using this season.  I have developed these based on: feedback from many past coaches, area town rules (Hockomock, N. Attleboro, Mansfield, etc),  as well as interjected some of my own ideas to the mix...

* Pitch count template: Download Pitch-Count-Forms.pdf

NOTE: All of the download links above can also be found on the PAL Downloads page (see left column on Home Page) and will remain there for reference.

Biggest changes to note are:
* Move to pitch counts (& inning limits)
* Stealing in minors/farm levels

* Teams at every level will be responsible for tracking pitch counts for BOTH teams.  At end of each inning coaches will confirm pitch counts with each other, higher count supersedes

* At the end of each game, all scores, pitch counts, innings pitched, will be submitted by BOTH coaches to:
League Secretary - Darrin Sprague -darrinsprague.pal@gmail.com
Baseball Director - Rich Boucher - rboucher1999@yahoo.com
League Statistician - Steve Rolfe - sdrolfe@gmail.com
Opposing Coach
** Farm does not need to report the scores, as we don't keep standings, just pitch counts/innings

SAMPLE post game email:
Red Sox 5 Yankees 3
Sox
John - 3 innings, 55 pitches, age 12
Jimmy - 2 innings, 34 pitches, age 11
Fred - 1 inning, 14 pitches, age 12
Yanks:
Billy - 3 innings, 62 pitches, age 12
Mark - 3 innings, 54 pitches, age 11

I will provide the initial pitching templates (hard copies) at the PAL (soft copy on the website and in this email).  It will be the responsibility of the coaches to make sure they have the proper tracking forms at the start of each game.  I don't necessarily need the coaches 'signatures' after the game, just confirmation on email that the numbers are correct.

I have also setup reps at each level:
Lou Weihrauch - Farm & Instructional
Rich Boucher - Minors
Darrin Sprague - Majors

All questions/issues should filter through them first, if still not resolved, it may be raised to myself, then to the board.

We will be evaluating the rules throughout the season and could provide tweaks where necessary.  At the end of the season, I will be soliciting feedback on rules - what worked, what didn't, potential modifications, etc.  This is a work in progress, and I appreciate (CONSTRUCTIVE) feedback - notice emphasis...

Please review the rules and pitching guidelines.  Also print and make sure you have a copy with you at games.

** Final note - please no shenanigans.  We all like to win, but please keep in mind that this is the REC season.  We are trying to develop players and keep kids interested in baseball.  I will have a very low tolerance to rule violations, unsportsmanlike behavior, and BS.  Remember - this is for the kids, not about our own ego's...
Thanks, Rich

PAL Practice Schedule
We've added a new page for practice times. Please check the Practice Schedule page in the left column. This will be updated as often as possible. It's a little long, but it's a start...

PAL PRACTICES 101

We have a lot of new children participating in the instructional groups this year for both softball and baseball so we want to explain to everyone how practice time gets allotted at the PAL.  First off, the PAL spent over ten-thousand ($10,000) dollars on field maintenance projects this past year so not all of the fields have been fully opened yet for practices.  Based on the recommendations of the field consultants who did the work, there will be no practices on the Nelson and Watters fields this week, with the exception of the KP High School girls' varsity and junior-varsity softball teams who each have one practice scheduled this week.  For those that don't know, the PAL fields (Watters and Nelson) are the home fields for the KP High School Softball team.  The consultant's concern was the effect of twenty plus teams practicing all week on those fields so we are holding off and giving the new sod an extra week to take.

However, with the beautiful weather forecast, the Eisele and Lewicki fields have been opened for practice (two weeks earlier that in prior years) and a practice schedule has been circulated among the coaches. For those that don't know, there is a hierarchy at the PAL based on age so the Girls' Senior teams pick one practice time first, then the Boys' Major teams pick one, then Girls' Major, then Boys' Minor then Girls' Minor and finally Boys' Farm in that order.  It is recommended that the older teams take the later time slots.  Once each team has picked a practice slot, the entire schedule gets posted to the website (see the tab labeled "Practice Schedule" on the left side of the PAL website). We know that some people spend a lot of time on their smartphones, IPADs, etc. and check emails frequently, but others do not, so please bear with us as we provide each coach with an opportunity to pick practice slots. We are trying to improve the pace that coaches pick practice times and also are exploring online scheduling options, but we are still working through that.

In addition to the recreation teams, the Plainville Pride 12U team will also be practicing.  They already had an open try-out for the team that will be participating in the April Fool's softball tournament.  Obviously, with an upcoming tournament, they will be allocated practice time.  None of the summer baseball teams have held open tryouts yet and there are no April Fool's baseball tournaments so there should be no summer baseball teams practicing at the PAL yet.

Bill Pereira, the Softball Representative, and Rich Boucher, the Baseball Representative, will be sending out more information directly to parents in the instructional group this upcoming week about practices and development goals. Blocks of time will be carved out for the instructional groups on Lewicki, and those teams can practice together as the focus will be on skills development, and not games, for the instructional ages.

So far, all of the baseball and softball recreational teams have picked at least one weekday and one weekend time slot for practice starting next week.  Additionally, each team has picked at least one weekday and one weekend batting cage session for their team starting next week.  We anticipate that each team will be able to add another field practice and batting cage slot for this week.  Including this week of practice, each recreational team will have signed up for four (4) field slots and (4) batting cage slots.  We anticipate having additional time and any available practice time that remains will be re-circulated among the coaches following the hierarchy listed above

The initial practice schedule just covers the time from now through opening day.  Since we haven't yet finalized the game schedule for the season, we cannot circulate the in-season practice schedule but will circulate that to the coaches as soon as we can. Some of our teams play teams from Wrentham, Norfolk, North Attleboro, Foxboro, etc. so we are trying to finalize the game schedule for the rec season as fast as we can, but it does involve multiple teams from multiple towns so bear with us.

Lastly, the PAL Board will be carving out some time for group clinics for the Farm boys and a morning hitting clinic for the girls.  The group skills clinics have been successful in the past so the PAL Board will be incorporating more of them this year.  Lastly, teams are free to double up with other teams or to have open practices so there is opportunity for additional playing time for the kids depending on each coach.

If you have any questions about the practice schedule, please contact Scott or Darrin. Scott's email is s_lacy@comcast.net and Darrin's is darrinsprague.pal@gmail.com.

PAL Little League Majors:Pre-Evaluation time added for Friday 3/9 (Baseball only!)
Given the recent influx of registrations, the PAL Board met tonight to discuss the player evaluation process for this year, particularly for potential PAL Major league Baesball eligible 10 & 11 year old boys.  We would like to provide some additional pre-evaluation time for all 10 & 11 year old players to give us a better sense of the total number of players that may be eligible to play in the Majors this year.  Pre-evaluations will be held from 7-9 PM Friday evening at the Wood School.  All players will still attend evaluations on Sunday at the scheduled times I communicated earlier.

Members of the Board will be in attendance to observe the 10 & 11 year old boys and collectively determine which players will be eligible for the Major league draft on Sunday.  The selection process will be determined by five Board members voting on each player.  Anyone receiving 3 of the 5 votes will be placed on the list of players eligible for the Majors.  Coaches will further evaluate these players on Sunday as part of the normal evaluation.

As a general rule, unless there are concerns over a player's safety, all 12 year olds and 11 year old 6th graders will be guaranteed a roster spot in the Majors.  Based on the remaining players that the Board voting determines to be eligible, we will decide Friday night whether there is a need for 4 or 5 Major league teams and the optimal roster size of each team.

I understand there may be some Friday evening conflicts so If you cannot make it Friday please let me know.  We look forward to a great start to the season as it quickly closes in on us!

Hope to see everyone Friday and/or Sunday!

NOTE: All softball players will report Sunday at KPHS Field House for evaluatios as communicated by Bill Pereira.

Regards,
Darrin Sprague
PAL Secretary

PAL Announcement 2/17/12: Little League Baseball is coming to PAL

LITTLE LEAGUE IS COMING TO PAL!

The Plainville Athletic League (PAL) and Plainville Little League are proud to announce that a chartered Little League is coming to PAL.  Both Boards of Directors feel that having a unified baseball league, chartered with Little League, under the PAL is in the best interest of all Plainville baseball players.  Both parties worked very hard to bring this to a successful resolution, and are very excited about the upcoming season.

Roy Blakely will be appointed as the Little League Representative and will work with Rich Boucher, the current Baseball Division Representative at PAL.  For those players who have already joined the Plainville Little League, you need to register with the PAL but the Plainville Little League will pay your registration fee.  All baseball players that are currently unregistered are encouraged to register with the PAL.  Player evaluations are coming up in March.  It’s time to play ball!  Additionally, if any parent is interested in coaching a baseball team for this upcoming 2012 spring recreational season, they should submit their name to Rich Boucher at rboucher1999@yahoo.com by the end of February.

The PAL will be holding a registration for the 2012 spring baseball and softball season this Saturday at our complex on Everett Skinner Road from 10AM to 1PM. Board members will be on-hand to answer any questions and update you on plans for our 57th season. You can also register online at www.palonline.org. Payments do not need to be made at the time of registration.

The PAL is proud of its long-standing policy to never turn away a child due to a family's inability to pay.

PAL Announcement 1/17/12
Dear PAL Community,

Some of you may have recently seen information relating to an organization called The Plainville Little League.  The Plainville Athletic League (PAL) wants to clear up any confusion that may be caused by the similarity in names.

The PAL is in no way affiliated with The Plainville Little League.  The PAL has been in existence since 1955 and is a non-profit youth sports organization offering baseball for boys age 5 to 18 (Diamond level) and fast pitch softball for girls age 5 to 16.  We are not funded by the Town of Plainville and rely on the generosity and support of our member families and local businesses in the community.

We offer baseball and softball activities year round. Our spring recreational season provides all interested children an opportunity to get active, have fun, meet new friends, and establish the camaraderie that makes Plainville a family community. Baseball and softball are both affiliated with the Hockomock Summer League. Baseball also participates in the Little North Attleboro League and the developemental Mansfield Fall League, focusing on teaching fundamentals to all ages and skill levels.

Collectively, the PAL has an estimated twenty-five teams participating in our summer and fall programs to complement the approximately 30 or more teams playing in the spring.  A number of skills clinics and pitching clinics are offered throughout the winter to keep the boys and girls playing and honing their skills in preparation for the spring season.  The PAL hosts multiple baseball and softball tournaments during the spring and summer as well.

The PAL also believes in giving back to the community which has been supporting us since 1955 through various programs.  Through the "PAL Cares a TON" food collection program, the Plainville Athletic League has supplied the Plainville Living Bread Food Pantry with more than 6000 pounds of food in the past two years.  The PAL is actively involved in raising awareness of breast cancer through the "PAL Goes Pink" program, raising funds to support local family's efforts to walk in the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer event.  Each year the PAL also provides up to $3000 in scholarships to High School Seniors to further pursue their college educations or post-graduation studies.  The recipients of these scholarships are students who spent many years growing up through the PAL programs and feel those experiences helped shape them as the young men and women to lead our community into the future.

To reiterate, the PAL is in no way affiliated with The Plainville Little League.  We will continue the many programs currently being offered and are always thinking of new, fun ways to provide more baseball and softball opportunities to our community.  If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact a member of PAL's Board of Directors.  You can find contact information for Board members as well as other information relating to the PAL at www.palonline.org  or on Facebook by searching Plainville Athletic League.

Sincerely,
PAL Board of Directors

The PAL is proud of its policy to never turn away a child due to a family's inability to pay.

Next General Meeting: 1/29/12

To: The PAL Community
From: PAL Board of Directors
RE: General Meeting
Date: 1/29/2012
______________________________________________________________________

On Sunday, January 29 the Plainville Athletic League will be holding a general meeting in the Jackson School cafeteria from 4:00pm to 6:00pm.

Our Secretary, Treasurer, Fund Raising Chairman, Facility Director, Softball and Baseball representatives will give regular departmental reports.

We will also cover a number of key dates that are fast approaching on the PAL calendar.

These dates include:
-          Registration deadline
-          Player Evaluation dates
-          Coach interview dates
-          Opening Day
-          Seasonal Tournaments
-          Picture Day
-          Closing Day

One additional agenda item we anticipate discussing has to do with the newly formed baseball league you may have heard of here in Plainville. The PAL Board of Directors welcomes any comments, concerns, remarks, observations or questions you may have regarding this start-up group.  We will do our best to provide you with the information we know in response to questions you may have.

In order to better facilitate our communities understanding of why a second baseball league has been created in our small town, the PAL Board has invited Board of Directors of the Plainville Little League to participate in open, frank and civil discussion regarding this new league.

As is the PAL’s longstanding policy, we encourage and welcome the members of our community to attend these meetings to participate in the process of running, developing and improving the PAL as our all volunteer community has done for the past 57 years.

It is the input of these volunteers over the past half-century which has made the PAL one of the premier baseball/softball facilities in Southern New England.

The PAL recently elected four new board members.  These new board members bring with them a host of new ideas, thoughts and experiences that we anticipate will make the PAL an even more attractive place to play in the near and distant future.

We look forward to seeing and hearing you on Sunday, Jan 29 at 4:00pm in the Jackson School cafeteria.

Summer Field Maintenance Schedule
2011 Summer Facility Manitenance Schedule.xls (18.50 K)

Download 2011 Summer Facility Manitenance Schedule.xls

All:
Attached is the schedule for facility maintenance that I firmly believe will allow all of our respective teams to play over the course of the next 6 weeks at a well maintained facility where all the trash barrels are emptied, all the litter is picked up, all the fields are mowed, all the weeds are whacked and all the players are above average.

The PAL is hosting the ASA 18U State Softball tournament this weekend so not only will we be focused on maintaining the condition of the facility throughout the week, but we'll want to be sure the place is in good shape for the teams who will be visiting this weekend.  Let's put on our best face.  Tournament like the ASA States, the KP Kup, Memorial Day Classic, KP Klassic, Fools Day, Columbus Day Clash and the Halloween Bash all benefit the PLA overall in the long run.  Let's all make it work better.  This is how we start.

Please make the effort to include the players in your maintenance/ clean up efforts.  They need to clearly understand that this is all being done for their benefit.  The more they become involved, the better things get.

Chris Murphy

PAL Summer Season Registration

This year the Plainville Athletic League has introduced a manditory summer registration for any softball or baseball player who will be participating on a PAL sponsored summer league (Girls Hock A & B, Boys Hock A & B, Boys North Attleboro, Boys Hock Diamond) team. This registration of $25 per player is a facility usage fee which will offset most if not all costs of maintaining the PAL complex during the summer season as well as providing equipment to the summer teams. Electricity, gasoline, trash removal, and baseballs/softballs are some of the major costs incurred during the season. Registration will also allow the PAL to have all players on record for insurance purposes. Again, it is a manditory registration.

As always if there is a family hardship, please contact a board member. The PAL is proud of its policy to never turn away a child due to a family's inability to pay.

Please note: The registration fee is seperate from any costs that have been been set by the coaches for each summer team, including but not limited to: uniforms, hats, league or tournament registration fees. If you have any questions, please contact your son or daughter's coach.

mowing schedule
"The PAL would like to thank all the coaches and volunteers who's efforts have contributed to our success so far this season.  As the weather starts to turn warm and with the irrigation/sprinkler system scheduled to water our fields every evening it will become vital for us to maintain the grass on all our field surfaces. We have posted a "Mowing Schedule" in the "Field Maintenance & Projects" section of the website.  All coaches are expected to contribute to the mowing/weed whacking of the fields.  You can access this schedule by clinking on the vertical navigation bar to the left of this screen.  Each division has been assigned a one week period in which they are responsible for mowing the fields/common areas and weed-whacking all the fence lines.   Please contact Chris Murphy with questions or for further clarification regarding this mowing schedule.  Thanks again for all your past efforts". -  Chris Murphy, Field Maintenance Director

Opening Day fundraiser for Wood School's Team Spike

Members of the Wood School’s Team Spike will be selling anti-bullying wristbands this Saturday at PAL Opening Day. Destination Imagination holds a competition where kids must create, develop, and present a skit. Team Spike wanted to send a message about bullying and their skit is titled "Bullying Is Wrong".  They are spreading the word about how not to bully and to be nice to everyone and show ways to help accomplish that.  It's a great message and the kids are very proud of themselves. The 5th graders placed 1st at the Regional competition in Medfield and tied for 2nd at the State tournament.  Team Spike is heading to Tennessee at the end of May to compete at the DI Global tournament.  Money raised from the wristband sales will help offset the cost of this trip.

PAL Kitchen Coordinators
From Mike & Lyn Burns, PAL Kitchen Managers:

First, thanks for stepping up and giving your time to the program.  Second, can we ask for a bit more?

The kitchen at PAL provides much of the cash flow we need to continuously improve the facility, purchase equipment and manage registration costs. It is run by us, the parents of the PAL.  As indicated on the registration forms, each family has agreed to cover a kitchen shift.
These shifts are assigned by team and each team will be commitment will not exceed (3) shifts per team, with each shift lasting 2.5 - 3 hours.  Each shift requires approx 3 adults.  Children over 10 are welcome to help, provided they are with a responsible adult and follow a few safety rules.  Most people will agree that their kitchen shift was fun and certainly not a chore.  It can be a good social event or even a chance to relive your high school fast food memories.

PAL Spring Field Cleanup and Project List Announced for Saturday March 19

The PAL would like to thank all the participants who showed up on Saturday,March 19th to dust off the PAL  in time for the upcoming season.  Without your efforts the PAL would not be in the great shape it is right now. With that said, the project list has been updated with just a few remaining items to address in order to get ready for the coming season.

Our first big event is this coming Saturday, March 26.  The PAL will play host site to the King Philip sponsored 2011 High School Softball Jamboree. Twenty-four teams from around the state, including your 2010 State Champion King Philip Warriors, will be converging on the PAL to  play a series of exhibition games in preparation for the upcoming season.

If you can tackle any of the remaining job please notify Chris Murphy at the number listed below and he will assist in getting materials and assembling the necessary labor.   Again, thanks very much for your past assistance in keeping the PAL one of the premier baseball and softball complexes in Southeastern New England.

Chris has updated the 2011 PAL Spring Cleanup project list. Please follow the link in the left-hand navigation column for  more details.

UPDATE 2/12/11:

Due to some confusion and delays related to the 2011 Spring Registration, ALL LATE FEES WILL BE WAIVED THIS YEAR. Even so, we are strongly encouraging that players are registered ASAP, as we need accurate player information to determine the number of coaches/teams for each level. Immediate payment is not required when registering- the most important thing right now is that we have the player information. As in prior years, we will do everything that we can to accommodate players who sign up late, but cannot guarantee that there will be available roster spots after teams are formed. Any questions, please contact a PAL Board Member ( 2012 PAL Board of Directors )

Uniform Pick-up Schedule & Plainridge Raffle
Uniform Pick-up and Plainridge Raffle
Friday 4/16 and Saturday 4/17

Coaches,

The link to the schedule for uniform day is below. I will be sending out a blast e-mail with this information but would also like you to follow-up with your parents regarding the schedule. Everyone on your teams needs to attend at their team's assigned time. Please let everyone know that they need $10 for Plainridge raffle tickets!! The only teams that need to pay uniform deposits are the Babe Ruth boys teams. The uniform deposit is $20 which they will get back when turning the shirt in at the end of the season. Some team names have changed so don't be alarmed if the team listed next to your name is different. Hat availability led to some of the changes.

Any questions, please let me know. Schedules are being finalized today so you will receive those by tomorrow. I will also have copies on Saturday to distribute to parents. Dan Robillard will be distributing shirts and collecting Plainridge money Friday evening. I will be doing so for the teams on Saturday. See you then!

Regards,
Darrin

Field Clean-up update
Thanks to all who braved the 72 degree weather last weekend to continue the cleanup of the PAL fields! Your determination and efforts are quite commendable as evidenced by the number of projects 'done' below.

We still have at least one more remaining PAL Field Clean-Up day:

- Saturday, April 3, 8:00 am - 5:00 pm, Rain or Shine....

For a list of projects, please check the Field Maintenance page (from the left margin menu)

Bring a friend, teammate, spouse, or even a complete stranger if they are willing to pitch in. Work gloves are suggested. If you can bring along a wheelbarrow, even better. Thank you!
